The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District and Bethesda Urban Partnership are delighted to announce their newest arts initiative: “Paint Bethesda,” a painting competition of downtown Bethesda’s buildings, icons, scenes and landmarks.  This art contest and exhibition will feature outdoor paintings of downtown Bethesda.  Artists from DC, MD and VA are invited to come to downtown Bethesda and paint “plein air” or paint a Bethesda icon in studio.

High school artists are also encouraged to apply. Up to 20 artists will be selected for the exhibition, and $4,500 in prize monies will be given to the top prize-winning artists.

The exhibition of the selected works will be held at The Writer's Center in December 2026 with a public reception for the artists on Friday, December 11. 

Awards: 

Best in Show - $2,500 

Second Place - $1,000 

Third Place - $500 

High School Artist* - $500 *High school student currently enrolled for the 26-27 school year may be awarded this prize.  

The Jurors will select up to 20 finalists who will be invited to display their work in a group exhibition at The Writer's Center in downtown Bethesda in December 2026.  

Eligibility 

Artists must be 18 years of age or older and permanent, full-time residents of Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. Works may be completed "plein air", in studio, or a combination of both. Works must feature a scene, building, icon, or landmark found within the defined competition boundaries located here. All works on paper must be framed and ready to hang. No reproductions. Maximum artwork size is 48" high by 36" wide. Artists may submit up to three paintings for consideration. Artwork must have been completed within the last three years and must be available for the duration of the December 2026 exhibition at The Writer's Center.           

The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District will collect a 40% commission on any artwork that is sold during the exhibition. Artwork does not have to be for sale at the exhibition. Selected artists must deliver and pick up artwork to and from The Writer's Center.

Gallery B is now taking rental applications for 2027 exhibits for solo or group shows. We offer the opportunity for you to sell your art and receive exposure in downtown Bethesda with no commission on artwork sold. The rental agreement is for one month and the cost is $1,200. Suggested gallery hours for the artists managing the space are Thursday – Saturday, 12-5pm and Sunday, 11am – 4pm.
